ELVIRA TELLS

Notes on the 2600 Spider Touring

18 March 2018

Our month of March continues with the stories of the "Lady in Alfa red" Elvira Ruocco, who today takes us on board the 2600 spider Touring

Equipped by the Touring coachbuilder in the two-plus-two convertible version, the 2600 was officially presented at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show and had a list price of 2,900,000 lire.

It differs from the 2000 Spider in the front end with newly designed grilles, new directional lights, a single air intake on the bonnet and a one-piece bumper.

The side of the car has a single chrome door sill with the Touring badge. Deflectors appear on the doors, while the hubcaps have a different design.

By 1965, the year before Touring closed its doors, 2,257 2600 spiders had been produced, confirming the success of this car with its 2,584 cc straight-six engine.

At a time when the engine compartment had plenty of space, the 6-cylinder engine of the 2600 found itself confined in a rather cramped space: the design had not originally taken the bulky 6-cylinder engine into account, but rather the initial 4-cylinder engine of the 2000. From 1963 onwards, four-wheel disc brakes were used on this model and later on the alternator was adopted in place of the previous generator, as for the saloon and sprint models.
