CULTURE
We are (a) Pop!
20 February, 2020

There is no journey without a soundtrack. There is no morning without the tune that will accompany the day. There's no night without a song that pierces your heart.

The radio, the voices that accompany us and become familiar, the music that doesn't leave us alone. The combination of car and radio is really inseparable and not even the most incredible cars can give up this small, precious, accessory.

You can imagine our enthusiasm when, thanks to the Circuito Lombardo dei Musei del Design, we were given the opportunity to take part in "Italian Style", the transmission conducted by Giampiero Kesten on the historic Radio Popolare.

LOMBARD CIRCUIT OF DESIGN MUSEUMS

The Circuit was created to give value to the heritage owned by archives and design museums in Lombardy; collections of great interest and international standing, housed in museum spaces of exceptional care and charm.

Thanks to the collaboration with Radio Popolare, "Italian style - Viaggi nei luoghi del Design" (Italian style - Travels in the placesof Design) was born. It is on air every Sunday, from January 26th, 2020, from 3.35 pm to 4.00 pm and it allows you to travel to the discovery of Lombard Museums, icons of Design: a real tour of Lombardy through the industries and objects that have made the Italian style famous all over the world.

Here you can listen to the podcast of the two episodes dedicated to the Fratelli Cozzi Museum.

POPULAR RADIO

Founded in 1976, year 0 of free radio, under the direction of Piero Scaramucci, "is an independent broadcaster, based on a cooperative formed by workers and collaborators, with the participation of representatives of political and trade union forces that have historically supported the experience".

In 1985, as part of the historic Bar Sport program, the comic trio of the Gialappa's Band made their debut.

After the direction of Danilo De Biasio, until January 31, 2013 the interim direction was held by a group consisting of the then director of the programs Gianmarco Bachi and Luigi Ambrosio, Massimo Bacchetta, Raffaele Liguori and Marina Petrillo. Subsequently, the editorial direction was entrusted to Michele Migone who remains in office until December 2018. Currently the editorial direction is entrusted to a regency composed of Claudio Agostoni, Massimo Bacchetta and Chawki Senouci.

Autonomy and subscription:

1976: editorial staff of Radio Milano Centrale, another left-wing station in Milan, which in 1976 will merge into Radio Popolare
Autonomous from editorial and political ownership, it is controlled by the cooperative society of its workers and by a large popular shareholding, spread among its listeners (11,975 shareholders). The radio also remains free thanks to independently produced advertisements and a real annual subscription, which listeners are often invited to subscribe to. In order to keep the same subscribers and at the same time acquire new ones, at fairly regular intervals the radio offers subscription campaigns that generally last from 3 to 5 days (currently the minimum amount required is €90 per year). There are currently about 15,000 subscribers.

The "Open Microphone"
A characteristic feature of the radio is the presence of a transmission called Open Microphone. The idea to open the microphones freely to listeners without any form of censorship dates back to the 70s. This idea proved so successful that it was taken up by many other radio and television stations, both local and national.

"I love the radio because it comes from people, comes into houses and speaks directly to us." Radio E. Finardi
