1900 Super Sprint, an "out of series"

The recovery of the Alfa after the war was marked by the appearance, in 1950, of the first saloon with a load-bearing body that coincided with the first model made on the assembly line. But the consecration of the "millennove" came when Touring produced a splendid coupé that was mass produced. Alfa took care of a particularly chosen production of the 1900 car in order to be able to offer to the most refined, sporty and demanding international customers some special types of "out of series", and the 1900 Super Sprint coupé was born in 1955 from the ever closer collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Touring that, already in 1951 had realized on the 1900C floorpan an elegant coupé with aluminium bodywork and worked almost entirely by hand according to the "superlight" method introduced by the Milanese bodywork in 1937.

The 1900 Super Sprint was presented to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in an unusual two-tone version in matador red and black, with a very fine leather interior. The absolute novelties were the five-speed gearbox and the introduction of a ratio to the bridge to allow the best recovery. The list price was set at 3,210,000 lire and, from 1956 to 1958, 599 units were produced.
The colours in the range had names such as "beige Isabella", "grey Biacca", "matador red", "cobalt blue", and "green/blue ocean" for the two-tone version.
This car also has a sporting history although its presence in the races was sporadic and less glorious than that of the saloon versions. It was approved in the Gran Turismo category for up to two liters. Among the most beautiful victories is
the 3rd Grand Prix Nacional Sport of Spain in 1956 where the Count of Caralt won in his category. Other drivers distinguished themselves at the wheel of the 1900 Super Sprint. I remember some of them: Piero Carini, Pier Francesco Calvi di Bergolo and
Mrs. Anna Maria Peduzzi ("The Moroccan").

In the photos of the time we often see her rewarded for her elegance and she was often a protagonist in many car and fashion combinations alongside models or socialites. Finally, a curiosity: of the three hundred cars that made up the personal garage of Reza Palhavi (Shah of Persia, 1919-1980), it seems that the Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint second series, Touring bodywork, was her favourite. He ordered it in 1956, red with black leather upholstery and steering wheel gearshift control.

Elvira Ruocco, historical memory of Alfa Romeo, thanks to her more than twenty years of experience at the Alfa Romeo Centro di Documentazione Storica, has become part of the Museum team and in the column "Elvira Racconta" she will share curiosities and anecdotes that you may not know or remember. We will retrace the legendary history of Alfa Romeo with her.
