It was previewed at the Sporting Club of Monte Carlo. Over three thousand people, representatives of the Alfa Romeo sales network worldwide, participated in groups in the six meetings held in the Principality from 23 April to 5 May 1983.
The Centro Stile, during the project phase, identified it with the number 905, but then it was called Alfa 33 to recall a previous illustrious one, the 33 TT12 that won the World Championship Marche in 1975, but it is also the direct descendant of Alfasud from which it will inherit the boxer engine and some mechanical and logistic details. The realization of the project respected the 3 years of time and investments foreseen. The 33, according to the management's objectives, was to occupy a place between Alfasud and Giulietta, while the Arna, which would soon come out of there, was to be placed close to the 5-door Alfasud still in production.

Among the many innovations introduced with the start of production of the 33, the integral robotization of the body assembly line marked an exceptional technological leap forward. On the Giulietta line, the robots were already in operation, but for the 33, 32 robots were used to weld the bodies and 8 for the floor of the car, a really good number to be considered the most advanced in Europe, so much so as to stand up to the comparison with the Japanese and American robot lines.
Initially proposed in two versions, the 33 was produced until 1994 in various outfittings and registered a good sales success.
