The NEW Quadrifoglio 1988

10 February, 2022

Fresh from the end of the Sanremo Festival, let's go back to 1988, starting with the song that triumphed that year: "Perdere l'amore", by Massimo Ranieri.

It seems like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?

Thirty-four years, to be exact.

For Italy, 1988 was the year of the 'golden prisons', the escalation of Mafia attacks and kidnappings for ransom. But it was also the year of the election of Sergio Pininfarina, Battista's son, as president of Confindustria, the death of Enzo Ferrari and the end of the war between Iran and Iraq that had begun in 1980.

Welcome once again to the Cozzi.Lab archive , the place in the Museum where we keep our historical evidence and fondest memories. This month we discover the 1988 Quadrifoglio, join us!

"...the future Zagato coachbuilder, and coachbuilder famous for the lightness and formal individuality of his creations".

"we will do it with a light hand, i.e. giving fantasy and image predominant roles'.

ettore massacesi, talking about the rebirth of il quadrifoglio".

NEW MUSA CAR

The car is a feminine noun thanks, it seems, to the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. But it was with the Futurists and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti's manifesto that the car became a source of inspiration for writers and, above all, painters.

Fast, dynamic, "more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace", the car was to become a true muse for innovators such as Umberto Boccioni, Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Gino Severini, Luigi Russolo, Giacomo Balla and many others.

Do you know all these wonderful paintings?

PLANET ZEALAND

The travel and lifestyle section of the Quadrifoglio moves to Zealand (not New Zealand!), a province in the Netherlands that is less well-known than the usual routes.

In fact, New Zealand is named after this area of endless spaces, green silences and windmills.

In the Quadrifoglio 1988 issues, we will also be talking about Liguria and the Langhe and Monferrato: the subject of travel is very popular, in these years when mass tourism is becoming even more widespread!

VETERAN SOUND

Let's leave Alfa Romeos aside for a moment and talk about radio!

In 1988, vintage radios from the 1930s were prized collectors' items: Emerson, Marelli and Fada are names that many of us still remember, after all.

Together with a small guide for collectors, the Quadrifoglio publishes some truly fascinating historical posters: here they are!

TURBO AT THE START

Much awaited by the Italian public, the 164 two-litre 175 hp arrived on the market, a re-edition of the car launched the previous year.

Real power, considering that the saloon can now reach 255 km/h with an acceleration capability of 7.2 seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill with fuel consumption that is anything but high.

A curious fact: the saloon could not exceed two litres of displacement because otherwise the punitive 38 per cent tax treatment would have been triggered in Italy.

ZAGATO'S ALFA ROMEOS

Also by Angelo Tito Anselmi is the article dedicated to Alfa Romeo's historic coachworks.

In 1988 great space for "...the future Zagato carrozziere, and coachbuilder famous for the lightness and formal individuality of his creations".

Finally, a bit of Alfa Romeo: let's enjoy them all!
