The NEW Quadrifoglio 1990

10 April, 2022

'Magical nights, chasing a goal'.

1990 for all Italians, and it's useless to pretend otherwise, was the year of Italia '90, the World Cup. It was a championship in which, while the world was moving forward, football was lagging behind due to the qualifications of the previous year: the winner was not the reunified Germany but West Germany.

The World Championship was also the first high-definition television broadcast in history.

In 1990 Italy did not win the World Cup, but it did win an Oscar: Tornatore brought home the statuette with a masterpiece, New Cinema Paradise.

Meanwhile, around the world, Nelson Mandela is freed after 28 years in prison (11 February 1990 is the symbolic date for the abolition of Apartheid), the Hubble Space Telescope is launched, Iraq invades Kuwait kicking off the Gulf War and Germany is completely reunited.

Curiosity about the future, which appears increasingly uncertain: this is the mood of 1990 that we want to bring to you once again through the pages of the Nuovo Quadrifoglio.

Here we go!

"To makebeautiful cars it was important to know the rhythms of metrics rather than integral calculus' Angelo Tito Anselmi

"we will do it with a light hand, i.e. giving fantasy and image predominant roles'.

ettore massacesi, talking about the rebirth of il quadrifoglio".

METAMORPHOSIS OF THE 33

"Nineteen hundred and ninety, the year of Europe'. So began the editorial of Nuovo Quadrifoglio 1990, which in that year had given birth to three international editions in English, French and German.

Three new worlds in which to present Alfa Romeo's new car, the New 33 reinvented on the basis of the saloon much loved in previous years (starting in 1983). Different and even more dynamic, the compact hatchback was ready to enter the hearts of Italians.

cartier, a timeless myth

Il Nuovo Quadrifoglio is a magazine that talks about Alfa Romeo, yes, but also a lot about the lifestyle of the Alfa fan. Travel, precious objects and modern habits are always at the centre of the story.

In 1990, the quarterly magazine dedicated an article to Cartier, a brand synonymous with luxury jewellery: for over a century and a half, the jewellery created at 13 rue de la Paix has adorned the beauty of the world's richest and most famous women.

After all, who does not remember the beautiful Panthère brooch created for the Duchess of Windsor in 1949 with platinum, sapphires and diamonds?

ALFA ROMEO COACHBUILDERS OF THE PAST

Also by Angelo Tito Anselmi is the article on Alfa Romeo's historical bodies: in 1990, the first period of production of the Touring Superleggera is mentioned, which brings to an end the review of the bodies that dressed the cars of the House of Portello.

"In order to make beautiful cars, it was important to know the rhythms of metrics rather than integral calculus". Anselmi said this and we totally agree!

TWO CENTURIES OF PINBALL

Is there anything more '80s-90s' than pinball?

The undisputed king of gaming rooms and bars, the pinball machine is the protagonist of this historical excursus which, starting from its invention in 1777 (in a non-electric version, of course) traces the upward parabola of the "foosball table" up to its moment of greatest success.

And we, the nostalgic, can only stop to read and sigh.

MEMPHIS, A UTOPIA?

As design lovers, we can only reserve the end of this appointment for a roundup of works by Ettore Sottsass and his collaborators.

Santa Fe, Lido, Polar... how many of these names do you remember?

Think about it while waiting for our next appointment that will take us straight to 1991!
